Concrete Rodeo
"Concrete Rodeo is a short documentary which follows the
paths of three bike messengers in early ’90s Chicago. First up is Jack
who is takes nothing seriously, jokes around, downs Buds on the job with
friends, throws around packages and feels as if he’ll never grow up. He
sees his life complete in the sense that he has no desires or
motivation to do anything else. He’s absolutely fine with his punk-like
appearance, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude, and enjoys spending his spare
time listening to old jazz and pop vinyls on a decrepit gramophone.
Next up is Jenny, a female bike messenger who does her job day-in,
day-out with as much of a professional demeanor as the people she
delivers to regardless of the difficulties that occur on a regular
basis. One such situation occurs when attempting to deliver an
inaccurately labeled package to Bloomingdale’s. Today, she’d resolve the
issue in a matter of seconds with a cellphone, but in her day Jenny has
to first find a payphone before making a call to clarify the parcel’s
owner.
The most interesting of the three is Curt who refers to himself as
Bike Boy. He’s also the most well-spoken and probably well-read of the
three. He’s also a bit of a smart ass who makes literary references
about time, questions his life as a messenger and contemplates as to
whether the job will eventually kill him or as Bike Boy he’ll be a 'boy
eternal.'"
