A Brief History Of Skateboarding

Animator Antonio Vicentini and his Brazilian designer friend David Galasse have created a 5-minute video that gives us a brief history of skateboarding, from its origins in 1950s California, through to being recognised as a crime in the 1990s, to its astronomical growth to a multi-billion dollar industry.

"Since 2000, the buzz in the media and several products have pulled skateboarding into bringing more smiles on people's faces," says the animation's narrator. "Also, with all the money rolling around skateboarding, there are more skateparks, better equipment, and more companies to keep innovating and creating cool shit."

Check it out below.

ONE OBSESSION || Where Do You #LiveYours?

Oakley has launched a brand new global campaign called ONE OBSESSION, which aims to inspire fans to pursue their passions. "Pursuing an obsession isn’t unique to professional athletes," says Oakley. "It binds everyone who shares a driving passion to turn their ideas into reality."

The initial one-minute commercial features Oakley skateboarder Eric Koston alongside baseball outfielder Matt Kemp, cyclist Mark Cavendish, cricketer Virat Kohli, surfer Gabriel Medina, Moto GP champion Marc Marquez, and badminton player Lin Dan. "It's such a mental game," narrates Koston. "If you can try and close your eyes and imagine yourself doing something, it's actually really hard to have that picture of yourself following through it."

Artwork Time-Lapses

Artist Holton Rower has created a beautiful new piece by pouring various colours of paint on top of one another, letting the psychedelic pattern run and drip down the side of a wooden block. Each of the paint layers stack on top of each other and expand, forcing the outer layers to get thinner and thinner and creating a truly stunning effect. Watch a timelapse video of the piece's creation below.

Jungle || A Short Film by Drake

Drake has just shared a 14-minute short film called Jungle via his October’s Very Own blog. The film is presumably here to build anticipation for his forthcoming album Views From The 6, it features a couple of tiny snippets of new music, but mainly shows Drake looking pensive in various settings, with the Toronto rapper explaining in a voiceover that he is worried his world has turned dark. There are also some nostalgic clips of him and friends trying to get into a club with no ID, some clips of a very young Drake singing with his Dad, and also randomly some footage of a building in Toronto being demolished. Hmm.

What does it all mean? We’re not too sure ourselves, but see what you think by watching it below.

adidas Originals || Superstar 80's by GONZ

A new mini-documentary from adidas Originals gives us an insight into the mind of iconic skateboarder and sub-culture visionary Mark Gonzales, speaking to him about New York City, his art, and his relationship with the adidas Originals brand.

"We're vandalising all the time," says Gonzales, talking about skateboarding. "We are doing this that definitely should be outlawed. We're breaking the law really, with skateboarding, but I love it. I can't stop […] I don't feel like I'm doing shit wrong when I jump on a handrail […] I am a skateboarder, but sometimes I completely lose touch with that and I'm completey immersed in other things, so then I can see how people who don't do it [skateboarding] must see it."

The Simpsons Pixels

Pixel artists Paul Robertson and Ivan Dixon have made this amazing tribute to The Simpsons, recreating the entire intro with their 16-bit pixel art, complete with a chiptune interpretation of Danny Elfman’s theme by Jeremy Dower. The two-minute clip packs in way more references than the regular intro, with lots of smaller characters making brief pixel appearances. It also gets pretty psychedelic, weird, and incredible at the end. Watch it below!
