Surfing at 1000 Frames-Per-Second

Surf specialists Chris Bryan Films has released a super-slow-motion surf film shot entirely at 1,000 frames per second. Starring world-class surfers such as Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Billy Keen and Matthew Meola, the 6 minute short was filmed using a Phantom Flex, Phantom Miro M-320S, and the new Phantom 4K Flex with Arri Ultra prime lenses, allowing the footage to be slowed down to such an extent that we can see every little move and adjustment the surfers make as they carve the waves.

NARCOSE

French director Julie Gautier has released a new short film entitled Narcose (Narcosis) which follows deep water free diver Guillaume Néry as he swims to an unbelievable depth in a large lake. "Deep water freediving exposes its practitioners to a form of narcosis, which induces several symptoms, among which a feeling of euphoria and levity that earned this phenomenon its nickname of 'raptures of the deep'," reads the film's blurb. "It draws its inspiration from his physical experience and the narrative of his hallucinations." If you have a fear of deep water, definitely don't click play.

Afterglow || Lightsuit Segment

Sweetgrass Productions has taken an entirely new approach to ski films, teaming up with Philips and Swedish agency Ahlstrand & Wållgren to kit out four world-class skiers' suits with over 7,000 LED lights and placing them in the virgin snow of the Alaskan wilderness at night. The result is truly stunning, with the skiers carving their way through the wooden slopes, lighting up the in green, red, blue and yellow as they go. The film required "a national government's worth of logistics, planning and civil engineering," said co-director Nick Waggoner when speaking to WIRED. Watch the full 12-minute version here.

Team Average || Sri Lanka

For this year’s Team Average adventure we put Stephanie Gilmore, Andrew Allen, Craig Anderson, Dion Agius and Dylan Rieder on a plane and sent them to the island country of Sri Lanka. There they surfed and skated and rode through the verdant hills in a bus helmed by a lunatic. They also had the time of their lives. And how could they not? Most skate/surf trips are about the frantic hunt for spots and swell, getting the photos and footage you’re contractually obligated to bring home, and that means there’s very little time to check out where in the world you are. But a Team Average trip, as you’ll know from previous issues, isn’t about documenting an action-packed story; it’s about like-minded souls getting to know each other while experiencing and exploring unfamiliar and exotic lands. It’s about friendship and bonding and living in the moment. And sometimes it’s about dropping a hot one behind a palm tree.

Russian daredevil duo Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov of YouTube channel On The Roofs have teamed up with some of their friends to hack one of Hong Kong's highest billboards. To achieve the feat, the duo took the lift to the top floor of the China Online Centre skyscraper, before going out onto the roof and climbing to the top of the giant screen. The film is an immersion into his mind and follows Janoski skating around the streets of New York. Directed by Pierre David and produced by Nike SB, the film combines beautiful footage of skating with a philosophical voice over from the artist, explaining his artistic process and his passion for skateboarding.
