Edward Hopper and Cinema || Great Art Explained Extra

Movies have been inspired by fine art from the very beginning of the cinema industry.

Edward Hopper was 13 years old when the first motion pictures were shown - he was in his late 40s when talking pictures came, and he died just as Bonnie and Clyde was being released.

You could say his life was tied to cinematic history.

Hopper is seen as one of the first 20th-century artists to be influenced by the cinema.

He was an artist - more than any other - who loved cinema - and cinema loved him.

The Pharrell Williams Story || Short Film

Pharrell Williams is just as much of a fashion icon as he is a music icon, and in this episode of Threaducation we’re going to be taking a look at the insane story of how that came to be.

He started his music career as a member of The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., and quickly made connections with industry legends like Jay Z.

Pharrell had always been into fashion, but where his journey really started was on a trip to Japan where he met Nigo, the founder of Bape.

We’ll talk about how Nigo helped Pharrell launch Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, and how the two of them completely revolutionized streetwear and sneaker culture.

Along the way they collabed the likes of Louis Vuitton, and earned the support of people like Kanye West and Virgil Abloh.

There are a lot of crazy twists and turns during this story, but through it all, the same thing remains true - Pharrell Williams is one of the most influential people alive, and his vision has single handedly inspired a new generation of creatives.

This is the Pharrell Williams story.

40,000 years of music explained in 8 minutes || Michael Spitzer

The history of music from bone flutes to Beyoncé.

The evolution of music over millennia is tied to human civilization.

For example, hunter-gatherers, who were very mobile, had to have small, light instruments to carry with them. Once we settled into bigger cities, larger instruments could be built.

Today, music is as accessible as running water. But if you were born in Beethoven's time, you would be lucky to hear two symphonies in your lifetime.

The Hand Of India || Short Film

At the height of the Cold War, amidst growing tensions between the US and Russia, Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi traveled to Washington D.C to deliver a pragmatic speech on the subjects of communication, understanding and friendship.

35 years later, with increasing polarisation around the globe, her simple yet elegant message has never felt so relevant.

However, it is in India, where Indira Gandhi's message still rings most true; somehow managing to make sense of a beguiling and beautifully chaotic society, with a rich reputation of inspiring swathes of Western visitors.

Shot during a two month backpacking trip, with minimal camera equipment, this is Simon Mulvaney attempt to communicate the beauty of Indira's home country, along with the resonating themes she touched upon all those years ago.

73-Year-Old Tattoo Artist Is A Legend In Japan || Short Film

Horiyoshi III, given name Yoshihito Nakano, is one of the world's most legendary full-body-tattoo artists. The controversial history of Japanese tattooing, or irezumi, can be traced back to around 10,000 BC, in the Jomon period. The Japanese government banned tattoos in 1872, as while the practice had risen as an art form, tattooed marks were still used as a punishment. The ban wasn't lifted until 1948, but the practice has retained its image of criminality. For many years, traditional Japanese tattoos were associated with the yakuza, Japan's mafia, and some businesses in Japan and public baths still ban tattooed customers.

Yoshihito's most devoted clientele are covered in full-body designs. Until 30 years ago, Yoshihito did his tattoos entirely by hand using the tebori technique, where a needle-tipped wooden or metal stick inserts ink into the skin. Nowadays, due to health and time constraints he completes them freehand using an electric needle. His clientele is now mostly westerners, attracted by his popular Instagram.

Great Art Cities Explained || New York

Abstract Expressionism would emerge from a post-war mood of anxiety and trauma.

These were artists who, like the surrealists before them had a profound interest in the unconscious mind.

They produced work that may have been abstract but was also emotional, expressive and universal.

Despite their differences, the physical act of painting united them.

The work they produced came straight from the gut.

It was an art form that was monumental in scale and an expression of the individual.

It would run alongside (and be inspired) by that other great improvisational American art form: Jazz.
