The Revolutionary Paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat || Short Film

There is something particularly poignant to me, as well as being a perfect example of fame exploiting creatives, regarding the story of the groundbreaking, African-American neo-artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The man who produced these mysterious paintings consisting of scratches and scribbles of colour, strange diagrams, various words, letters and numbers meticulously placed in a constellation of imagery would be unlike anything the art world had yet seen. And most importantly, they would unveil a huge social flaw that up until his time, was not yet discussed or resolved in the art world as well.

In a community that seemingly still clung onto the influence of caucausian European history and lore, by the 1980s Jean-Michel would in the most creative ways possible, implement his both his Porteguese and Haitian roots into his work, in an admirable effort to at last allow black culture to become part of art history.

Although his legacy now has been globally influential more than possibly Jean-Michel would have imagined, his life before his eventual untimely death, aged just 27, would be nothing short of heartbreaking.

Although he obtained all the fame and money he could have dreamed of, it would still not be enough to achieve the one thing he wanted above all else, which was for people to accept him.

Although his fascinating career was sadly brief, his whole story shines an invaluable light on how sensationalism can truly exploit the vulnerable, and how irrefutably difficult it would be for a young talent in the 1980s to prove his significance and overturn misconceptions of him, simply based on his background and the colour of his skin.

Today we explore, the now what could be called, Revolutionary Artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

 

The Incredible Story of KENDRICK LAMAR || Short Film

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer.

He is often cited as one of the most influential rappers of his generation.

Aside from his solo career, he is also a member of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy alongside his former Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) labelmates Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q.

Raised in Compton, California, Lamar embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name K.Dot, releasing a mixtape titled Y.H.N.I.C. (Hub City Threat Minor of the Year) that garnered local attention and led to his signing with indie record label TDE.

He began to gain recognition in 2010 after his first retail release, Overly Dedicated.

The following year, he independently released his first studio album, Section.80, which included his debut single "HiiiPoWeR".

By that time, he had amassed a large online following and collaborated with several prominent rappers.

He subsequently secured a record deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, under the aegis of Interscope Records.

Joan Miró was born in 1893 in Barcelona and was a Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist.

Most of his work has been interpreted as Surrealism with a touch of his personal style and a manifestation of Catalan pride and is also sometimes veering into Fauvism and Expressionism.

He has had a significant influence on the late 20th-century art and its artists such as Motherwell, Calder, Gorky, Pollock, Matta and Rothko.

Two museums are dedicated to his work: the Fundació Joan Miró and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró.

He died in 1983 at the age of 90 years because suffered from heart failure.

Like the silk moths the series is named for, Chinese-born, Pittsburgh-based artist Su Su’s Bombyx Paintings quiver with a physical fervor. Thin strands of oil paint in an innumerable amount of colors reach through the silk tulle foundation of each work, forming highly-texturized self-portraits that turn gravity upside down.

The process behind Su Su’s Bombyx Paintings is one of her own invention. Using fine-tipped syringes filled with oil paint, the artist gingerly injects color through a stretched sheet of silk. At a painstaking pace, Su Su’s compositions come to life via this amalgamation of texture—only visible to the artist through a large mirror laid underneath.
