"The Legend," Mark Gonzales Finds Perfect Balance in Fine Art and Skateboarding || HYPEBEAST Diaries

HYPEBEAST meets up with artist Mark Gonzales in his Lower East Side studio. The Supreme team member still skates, but has mellowed from his raucous early years. “I think at 50, I think I reached the type of maturity where my art is fine art,” he chuckles. “Where before it was just kid stuff.”

“Maybe inside the skateboard world I’m someway on the outside,” Gonzales reflects. “I’m a different way.” As he manuals through Chinatown and shows us the knick-knacks inside his studio space, he meditates on the contrast between his physical approach to skateboarding and emotional take on artwork. “I’m not afraid to … break a bone or … lose my teeth,” Gonzales affirms. “But… I like soft colors, I like pink, I like a lot of things that aren’t really ‘tough."

Inside the space, the Gonz maneuvers around half-finished canvases, Funko Pop figurines, old skate magazines and retro Makaha boards to get to his window-side workspace. “Mostly you can see it’s pretty messy, that’s the way I work.” he admits “Sometimes it’s hard for ideas to formulate with a clean environment.” As he paints, Gonzales considers how his work attitude has shifted “It’s kinda weird to not have a reason but just to be following an instinct. In my opinion, thats what makes good art.”

As the foreigner peaked through the branchy hut he saw a dozen more just like Riku’s family, it was at that moment he realised he was in the Land of the Samurai...

Have you ever been on a Skateboard Tour? Do you know the rules to “bring home the mission”?

The new video of the Italian Vans Skate Team talks exactly of this.

The title is “How to Survive a Skate Tour” and it tells some of the clichés of life on tour with skaters.

The film takes place in Fuerteventura and it transforms into an entertaining hand-book for all skaters.

A skateboard video presented as an ironic illustrated guide that summarizes the predictably taken forgranted differences between a tour where everything falls into place and one that turns into a battle-field.

After grinding his way through a 3 year business degree that he didn't care much for, Michael Veltman set off on 10 months of travel to try kickstart his career as a surf cinematographer.

In 2018 Michael Veltman traveled to Hawaii, Australia and through Indonesia forming new friendships, networks and experiencing some amazing swells at waves he never dreamed he would visit.

Upon his return home, Michael Veltman put together "metanoia" in hopes of getting his name out there and securing a job in the surf cinema industry, and to grow his work into other areas of film too.

For years they’ve been hunting slabs and beachies, exploring, being nomadic and dodging the great whites along the way…

This however, is possibly one of Michael Novy’s best clips yet. 

Novy tears into 4 days of pumping waves. He surfs with a confidence and conviction that is satisfying to watch.

Novy was easily best on ground for this swell in South Australia… with other top riders there and even the likes of Dane Reynolds giving Novy kudos for his charging and ability to ride out of these insane barrels.

As part of his Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, the former late night host heads over to Kanye West’s California home where, as well having a tour of the place, he talks to West about his inspirations and receives some fashion advice.

West explains that the whole home has been centred around the traditional Japanese aesthetics sensibility of wabi-sabi, which revolves around ideas of transience and imperfection. 

Before taking Letterman through to his YEEZY showroom, we get a quick look at his Yuji Ueda ceramics collection and a bathroom with a ambient light that covers the entire ceiling.

Shifting focus for the second installment of "Yasiin Gaye", Amerigo aimed to highlight the often overlooked accomplishments of Marvin Gaye's role as the producer.

"I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin's original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context."
