BEHIND THE SUN || Short Film

In 2017 3x World champ Mick Fanning took the year away from full time competition to explore the world and experience new places. 

Matt Kleiner was lucky enough to join him on a trip the the Arctic Circle to direct an episode of Red Bull's "Chasing the Shot" where he surfed through the night under the Northern Lights. 

Although the days were extremely cold and short with only a few hours of light, they managed to find great waves and stood in awe of the scenic beauty in every direction. 

This is Matt Kleiner directors cut from that trip and features some of his favorite daytime moments while focusing on the scenic side of their trip.

JUTLAND II || Breath of the Seasons

'Breath of the Seasons' has been Jonas Høholt personal project from early 2017 until early 2020.

Living around the Jutland peninsula in Denmark his entire life, what inspired him to make this
film was the very difference between winter, spring, summer and autumn in the already
diverse Jutlandic landscapes - and the visually beautiful story this has.

To show this cycle in nature through timelapse photography has been a mammoth task and
a huge completion for Jonas Høholt personally. 

It has driven him through all spectres emotionally;
exhaustion, excitement, despair, joy and everything in between.

The countless hours spent on locations made him see and feel the difference of all four
seasons. 

It opened his eyes to how similar nature actually is to humans; As nature takes a
single breath all four seasons play before our eyes until she’s ready for the next breath and it
all starts over again.

Energy is everywhere and nothing is at a standstill.

The Coronavirus Explained & What You Should Do || Animated Short Film

The wonderful team over at Kurzgesagt have jumped to it double fast, working day and night to put out an informative short film about the Coronavirus.

The animators and researchers usually spend months working on each short film, so to react to something so quickly really was a huge accomplishment.

Kurzgesagt does state however, that the animation is a little more simplistic than usual, but it still looks great to us.

“In December 2019 the Chinese authorities notified the world that a virus was spreading through their communities,” says Kurzgesagt. “In the following months it spread to other countries, with cases doubling within days. This virus is the “Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2”, that causes the disease called COVID19, and that everyone simply calls Coronavirus. What actually happens when it infects a human and what should we all do?”

People of Angola || Short Film

Simon Lane spent three weeks capturing the people and places of Angola for Euronews, commissioned by the Angolan government.

In that time he discovered that Angola has spent most of his lifetime in a brutal civl war. 

The west African country lost an estimated 500,000 people across 27 years.

Simon Lane produced eight TV commercials to promote everything from tourism to trade.

The scenes captured in this film did not fit into the TVC format so he decided to make an anthropological film.

Photographers in Focus: Alec Soth

Isolation and silent unrest is at the heart of this visual storyteller’s tale of contemporary America.

Sleeping by the Mississippi, the monograph published in 2004 by photographer Alec Soth, was a landmark photobook that established him as one of the most evocative chroniclers of contemporary life in America. 

Embarking on a series of spontaneous road trips along the Mississippi river, Soth’s formative work follows in the tradition of the ‘on-the-road’ photography of Robert Frank, Walker Evans and Stephen Shore, capturing the spellbinding landscapes, eclectic communities and individuals that exist outside of the global spotlight.

In this special edition of Photographers in Focus, commissioned with Magnum Photos in support of their online learning platform, Magnum Learn, filmmaker Joppe Rog hits the road with Soth as he seeks out exciting topographies and inspiring faces around his home state of Minnesota.

The episode unveils some of Soth’s most iconic images, such as Peter's Houseboat (2002), an intriguing large-format image centered around clothes hung on a drying line in the middle of a snow-covered expanse—a picture that invites viewers to contemplate isolation and home comforts. Misty (2005), his compelling portrait of a woman wearing a swimming cap and full face of make-up, was captured with such exacting shallow depth of field that her ears, shoulders and collarbone blur into the distance, rendering her all the more enigmatic.

Soth’s artistry lies in his ability to make the most modest images cavort with light and texture. The photographer’s most recent book, I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating (2019), includes Leopold (2018); an image of an elderly man with a stick-and-poke abdomen tattoo splayed across a sofa—his expression a heady mixture of fragility and defiance.

All these images, liked many of his others, invite audiences to consider topics such as illness, art, death, religion and politics across the States. 

Soth became a member of Magnum Photos in 2008, an event that marked his power to evoke the ineffable and produce serene images tempered by silent unrest.

Produced in partnership with Magnum Photos to celebrate the launch of Alec Soth: Photographic Storytelling, Magnum’s second online photographic learning course.

Nazaré || Big Wave Surfing

In November 2017 Jamie Hancock flew over to Portugal from the UK with huge waves inbound for Nazaré. 

In the morning of the big swell, Andrew had a nasty wipeout and broke his back and was rushed to hospital after being rescued by the jet ski team and brought to the shore.
