Torren Martyn || 'Calypte - a sailing and surfing voyage'

When Torren Martyn and Aiyana Powell borrowed the 35ft sailing boat 'Calypte' and departed from the east coast of Thailand in early 2022, they had a combined sailing experience of only a few days.

The one requirement of their charter was to eventually deliver the boat to Eastern Indonesia. They could learn as they went, get a few friends with sailing experience to help through the tricky bits and pick up as much as possible from them along the way.

With this plan, the pair embarked onto the South China Sea, headed up through the Strait of Malacca and around the tip of Sumatra; out into the Indian Ocean on a year-long expedition in search of waves.

What seemed like an idyllic journey didn’t come easy. It was difficult to anticipate the challenges of the sleepless nights, the endless rolling and tossing of the boat, the breakdowns, the relentless maintenance and confined space. But adventures always seem sweeter if it really feels like you had to work to get there.

Naili Basiladze shows us how to make a traditional Georgian churchkhela with grapes harvested from her own vineyard. Strings of nuts are repeatedly dipped in a mixture of grape juice and flour. Once dry, the finished result is a deliciously sweet stick of churchkhela.

Churchkhela’s extremely long shelf life is a testament to its historical use. Being naturally rich in the calories found within the grape juice, it provided sustenance to Georgian soldiers who would often need to travel long distances.

However, while we tend to have a pretty good idea of how food works, we often have misconceptions about particular recipes, especially when they come from other countries.

There are also some ingredients that defy popular understanding and have things about them most people are not aware of.

 

Where the 1960s "psychedelic" look came from || Short Film

When you picture hippies, you probably picture bell bottoms, long hair, and LSD.

You might also think of a very specific graphic design and illustration style, seen on concert posters and album covers: curly, cloudy, barely legible lettering, trippy color combinations, and decorative meandering borders.

This style was first conceived in San Francisco by a handful of designers in the late 1960s.

Their job? Make posters for bands like The Byrds, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller Band, Jimi Hendrix … all of whom were just getting their start, competing for nightly stage time at venues like the Fillmore and the Avalon.

But these designers didn’t invent that now-iconic style.

In fact, they were heavily influenced by an art movement that started in the late 1800s called Art Nouveau.

For some it is a symbol of knowledge, others philosophy, even existence itself. As the critic Gabriel Mourey said: “It is simply a man for all time”. Yet, Rodin had no intention of producing such a complex universal symbol when he first conceived the idea.

And The Thinker itself might never have existed, if Rodin had been accepted by the establishment in the first place.
