LOVE || Short Film

We are excited to announce Jonathan Rentschler’s photobook “LOVE” available to order through Paradigm Publishing and a short film to promote the book documenting the last days of LOVE Park and the destruction of the plaza.

About the book:

LOVE follows the last generation of LOVE Park inhabitants and reveals life as it was within this notorious urban plaza. The images, gathered over a three-year span, tell the story of a deeply rooted community shadowed by a police state and a biased city government.

Ultimately the victim of urban revitalization, the park closed in February 2016 for a $16 million complete renovation. But the diehard locals refused to leave, continuing to skate the plaza even as it turned to rubble. In the end, LOVE is a narrative about loss.

About LOVE Park:

LOVE Park (1965-2016), also known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, was located in the center of Philadelphia. Architect Vincent Kling drafted the mid-century urban design, which was then implemented by city planner Edmund Bacon. Although it was not designed for skateboarding, the plaza was host to a wave of skateboarders who first discovered its granite expanses as early as the 1980s. It was raised to global renown in the late ’90s with a surge of media coverage. Today, LOVE Park is remembered as one of the foremost landmarks of street skateboarding.

San Francisco Shut Down || COVID-19 Quarantine

Creative studio Space Race Studio has created a short film documenting the very strange scenes in San Francisco right now.

Shot using a drone, the 3-minute short film takes us through the abandoned city streets and vehicle-less intersections.

“Driving through San Francisco during the pandemic is jaw dropping,” reads the description.

“Thankfully few people are outside (I wasn’t even close to a person), but seeing the shops boarded up is tough to see. I made sure the drone wasn’t a nuisance to anyone while shooting this short documentary of this…very weird time in San Francisco.”

Phoniks || Time Goes By (Full Album)

Coming off the heels of being highlighted in a new Netflix documentary "Underdogs" Don't Sleep Records artist Phoniks is back at work releasing his new atmospheric instrumental tape titled "Time Goes By"

Phoniks weaves foreign jazz loops, soundtracks and soul b-sides together with apocalyptic movie samples, DJ cuts and vinyl drums to form a cohesive 18-track album.

Phoniks continues to evolve his sound, bringing more live instruments into the mix than on any of his previous projects.

The album opens with jazz chords played off a midi keyboard, using sound design techniques to make them feel like they were sampled out of a dusty attic somewhere, before homogenizing with real vinyl loops as the beat drops.

Compositions such as "One Time" ft. DJ Eveready are completely sample-free.

Despite the addition of more instruments, it's still the crate digging ability and ear for melodic jazz samples that drives the sound across the albums 41 minute runtime.

Enjoy.

MANERA || SURF LIBRE

Watch Dion Agius and Brendon Gibbens as they prove why surfing can be considered as a performing art rather than just a simple sport.

As if addicted to the ocean and the waves, Dion and Brendon have a constant desire to surf.
It’s an obsession, a fantasy permanently hidden somewhere inside no matter where they are.

It makes surfing sound a lot like a drug.

Paul Gauguin couldn’t get up in the morning without thinking about picking up a paintbrush.
He said painting set his soul free from the oppression of living as if it were the only outlet that allowed him to appreciate things.

Surfing is their painting.

Surfing is their art. They are the artists of their sport.

WORLD WAY || The City of LAX

The impetus for "WORLD WAY || The City of LAX" was born in 2013 as Chris Pritchard sat on a rooftop in El Segundo, waiting for a shoot to begin and looking out over LA.

The incoming planes looked like a highway, evenly spaced and spread across multiple lanes.

This led his eye to the end of their path - LAX.

Chris Pritchard realized he had a fully unobstructed view of the airport, and immediately started capturing timelapses of it.

He became fascinated with the many layers of movement that were visible - planes taking off and landing, planes taxiing, ground support equipment moving on the ramp and throughout the airport, passenger vehicles on World Way, passengers on foot outside and inside the airport - all moving at their own unique pace.

It made him realize that LAX is a city unto itself, with so many moving pieces and individual people all doing their part to keep it moving.

Despite its struggles, it is a logistical and modern marvel.

He wanted to show it in a way it had never been seen.

Flowers blooming 2 || Short Film

Slovakian photographer Majo Chudý has created a beautiful time-lapse showing various flowers blooming across a three-minute timespan.

Of course, in real life it took the flowers a whole lot longer to reveal their true beauty – 929 hours in fact.

The short film took Chudý an incredible nine months and 40,000 photographs to create, setting up each plant in a simple studio in front of his Sony a7 mirrorless camera (and Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, for those wondering).

The work didn’t stop there either, as Chudý says he tediously removed various “imperfections” such as little insects in post-production.

Check out the result below.
