René Magritte || Great Art Explained

In The Lovers II, by Magritte, he takes the cinematic cliché but disrupts our voyeuristic pleasure by covering the faces in cloth. A moment of connection becomes one of isolation, of sexual frustration. An intimate moment becomes something dark and effortlessly disturbing. Something hidden and anonymous.

Rene Magritte denied that his traumatic childhood was connected in any way with his art, but in this short film, we look at the possibility that his past affected him more than he admitted.

Seba released two studio albums during his lifetime: Metaphorical Music (2003) and Modal Soul (2005), while the album Spiritual State was released posthumously in 2011. The Unexpected Objects That Fill A Designer's Home || Short Film

From yellow-tinted trinkets to arty postcards, potted house plants to personal paintings, Alison Lloyd’s Hackney home is overflowing with collectibles.

Or, in her words, “I’m a gatherer of crap,” the founder of Ally Capellino smiles, sitting next to a repurposed table she found in a park. “I pick up stuff that I can’t bear the thought of being thrown away.”

Long-time readers might recall the first visit to Alison’s flat a few years ago, during which she described her interiors style as “organised clutter”.

Much to our delight – and precisely why she’s a brilliant subject for our Seven Wonders series – that hasn’t changed. “I’ve got an emotional attachment to everything,” she says.

In this short film, we tasked her with selecting her favourite things from the many objects that fill her home.

The Complex World of Digging || Resident Advisor

What exactly makes '90s records so loved—and fought over?

Digging—the art of searching for records—can take many different forms. From clicking through endless rabbit holes on Discogs and getting swept up by the YouTube algorithm, to, as the name suggests, spending hours thumbing through the bargain bins of record shops.

Digging is also a catch-all term for one corner of clubland. Soundtracked by the house, techno and electro of the '90s and early '00s, this world is driven by a love of obscure records. The scene emerged during the late '90s, led by DJs like Ricardo Villalobos, Vera and Zip and popularised at clubs such as Club der Visionaere in Berlin, fabric in London and, years later, Phonotheque in Montevideo.
In the age of the internet, there are more ways to go deeper and deeper, finding records that are rarer and rarer. Over time, politics and various unwritten rules have emerged: price hikes on Discogs, the economics of reissues and guarding track IDs as if they were gold.
All this begs the question: is it possible to value old records while also sharing them? Can you develop a unique sound and be inspired by the DJs you love? How do you balance innovation and nostalgia?

This short film explores the complex world of digging.

Wonderful Waste || Aussie Architects Turning Waste Into Furniture & homes

Inspired by her time working in India, architect Clare Kennedy has based her design & practice around one Gandhi principle, build with materials in a Five Mile Radius.

It’s led her to seek out salvaged materials like leftover concrete and rotten power poles, and alongside a collective of like minded designers, carpenters, and makers they’ve developed zero-footprint product lines and practical architect and design solutions that keep waste out of landfill.

Developing new ways to build our homes, and the things that fill them, more sustainably; for everything from individual homes, to cafes, breweries and skyscrapers.
