Yohji Yamamoto || Master of the Shadows

Phil Sansom has partnered with Broadwick Live to present a new short film dedicated to Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. Master of the Shadows was in turn captured in route to Y-3’s FW16 collection launch in Paris earlier this year.

The interview finds Yamamoto discussing his unmatched passion for design, albeit challenging at times to remain focused.

“Around 15 years ago, I felt that I had come too far from the street,” he revealed. “I was almost losing my enthusiasm for making clothing.”

Shortly thereafter, Yohji embarked on a partnership with adidas, thus creating Y-3. Yamamoto insisted that it was “time to care for the body,” which led to the futuristic sportswear label being born.

The Wait || Short Film

Short film The Wait follows young Belgian wildlife photographer Michel D’Oultremont as he trails wild bison through the remote mountains of Romania. The beautifully shot documentary came to be after director David Hayes and producer Hannah Salvanes Mclean saw Michel’s work win the 'Rising Star' award at the Natural History Museum’s 2014 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. They approached him to document his next adventure, with the resulting film eventually becoming The Wait. 

  The 10-minute piece captures the anticipation, patience and passion of Michel’s art, following the process from his Belgian home all the way through to the lengthy stake-outs on the Romanian mountains. Speaking about the film he said: 

"During the shoot luck wasn’t really on our side as the animals were very discreet. That’s also what makes wildlife photography so special; nothing is ever guaranteed. The final film is incredible and I think that phrase 'the wait' perfectly encompasses the tough conditions we were in."

“All Day All Night” is a short documentary featuring legendary rapper Del the Funky Homosapien (Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics). We met in São Paulo in a skateboarding session where he talked about his struggle to improve his flatground ollie and music.

The film builds a parallel between his thoughts and the chaotic urban aesthetic of São Paulo.

LOUW Skateboards has just release a special project dedicated to the Menace Days as explained by LOUW’s boss Enrique Lorenzo: “Billy Valdez, Eric Pupecki, Steven Cales, Fabian Alomar, Joey Suriel, Lee Smith and Javier Nuñez: friends with whom I spent great moments since 1996. I met them in Chaffey, Rialto, a school where we used to skate. After moving to Hollywood with Socrates Leal and starting to shoot for World Industries, we began to skate together daily at USC, Santa Monica, Venice, Lockwood, Los Feliz… Being with them was a bit surreal. I knew who they were, but i never imagined getting to get along so well. I did not know much English and they spoke perfect Spanish, so it was easy to become good friends!”

“Tribute” is the name of the video edited by Mario Cano and filmed by Fernando Garcia (L.A.), Enrique Lorenzo, Felix Bollaín and Mario Cano. adidas Football is introducing the new soccer season in Europe with its latest ‘BLAH BLAH BLAH’ commercial, which is a part of the company’s new film series First Never Follows. The dynamic clip features an array of mixed-media and star players including Paul Pogba from Juventus (or is it soon to be Manchester United?), as they defy media gossip and get on with the game. In the clip, the Frenchman tells the camera, “Don’t believe everything you read in the papers.” Pogba has been linked with a move to Old Trafford worth at least £110 million GBP (approximately $147 million USD) all summer long. The film also stars Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez, Chelsea’s Diego Costa, and managers such as Zinedine Zidane and Jose Mourinho. Check out the clip below. 

Palace Skateboards || V Nice

Palace Skateboards has released a full-length skate video simply titled "V Nice". It's been shot in the retro aesthetic the brand has become known for, using lo-fi VX1000s paired with the classic wide-angle "Death Lens" (we're guessing…) that was used by skate filmmakers worldwide back in the 90s. Famous skateboarding locations such as Venice Beach add to the retro feel of the 20-minute clip. Parts come from team riders such as Lucien Clarke and Chewy Cannon.

Danny Macaskill || The Ridge

The Ridge is a short film from Danny Macaskill that explores his native home of the Isle of Skye while mixing in a death-defying mountain bike ride. It takes place along the notorious Cuillin Ridgeline in Scotland and the music, cinematography, and everything else is just perfect. But fair warning, it will make you want to visit this country in person immediately after watching.
