The Bootleg Nikes that Got Banned by Big Tobacco || VICE

In 2006, New York City designer Ari Saal Forman dropped a limited run of Menthol 10s, a one-of-a-kind sneaker that drew inspiration from and took a shot at Nike and Newport.

Written right there on the tongue, Ari explained that the shoe was “dedicated to the two brands that have taken the most and given the least.”

Once the companies got word that the shoe was out, they did everything they could to get it off the market.

Ari wound up getting a cease-and-desist letter from Nike and facing an aggressive lawsuit from Newport.

To this day, he’s not even legally allowed to own a pair.

VICE met up with Ari in Manhattan to hear the inside story of why he made the Menthol 10s, and why he took on a legal battle in the name of conscious consumerism.

In June 2018, professional surfers Arthur Bourbon and Damien Castera travelled to Africa in order to make a documentary film about Liberia.

They went there to witness the history of the first surfing community in this country, devastated by 15 years of civil war.

Here is a short film introducing their journey.

A feature-length documentary is currently being edited and will be available in early 2019.

Jonah Hill has made an appearance on Complex’s ongoing series Sneaker Shopping, turning up alongside Sunny Suljic, a skateboarder and the young star of his directorial debut Mid90s.

Host Joe La Puma met the pair at Stadium Goods in New York City, where they discuss skate culture, the process that went into creating his new film and, of course, their favourite sneakers of both past and present.

follows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. 

Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programmes.

GOLDEN BARBICAN || Short Film

GOLDEN BARBICAN is a new film from Joe Gilbert which explores the beauty of London’s iconic Barbican Estate.

Built as part of the post-war regeneration initiative, the Brutalist buildings are seen as ugly by many, while others view them as a beautiful social utopia.

It was filmed during the “golden hour” across six weeks, each shot shows a single sunset. “The Barbican has an incredible transformative ability,” says Gilbert. “In golden hour, as the sun is setting, the estate morphs into a glowing wonder differing from it’s usual brutal and imposing appearance.”
